About the author

John Coles, together his wife Anne, moved to the area four years ago. They have since been regular worshippers at St. Mary’s, where the vicar is their daughter -in-law.

Sir John was a diplomat for 37 years, ending his career as Permanent Under Secretary at the Foreign Office and Head of the Diplomatic Service. Earlier he held the posts of Private Secretary for Foreign and Defence Affairs to the Prime Minister, Ambassador to Jordan and High Commissioner to Australia.

Among his published books are “Making Foreign Policy. A Certain Idea of Britain”  (John Murray 2000) and “Blindness and the Visionary. The Life and Work of John Wilson.” (De la Mare 2006).
